Congratulations to the following WINNERS !
1ST PRIZE
SM48162 Julien Sarale + Jules Burguet (FRANCE)
Jury Remarks:
The program is organized in two volumes strategically arranged in the place that dialogue with the pre-existing. The added constructions are incorporated with courage, valuing the ruins and offering new readings of the place, very surprising and appropriate to the activities that are going to take place there.
A fine proposition which ‘casts’ the intervention and entombs the original monastery, creating a new interiority of deep reflection and poise. The ground plan is elevated as a significant encounter in the proposition, by creating a series of deep light ‘fields’, or ‘hortus concluses’ - generated by two economical interventions. With limited formal means, the whole site is recalibrated and experientially enlivened.
The design proposal is characterized by a careful relationship with the pre-existing: the new volumes complete the geometries suggested by the ruins, revealing fragments of architecture and hidden interpretations of the landscape. The silence of the deep shadow represents a counterpoint to the bright light that embraces the cliff.
Congratulations !

2ND PRIZE
SM48101 Nils Pyk + Tania Utomo (JAPAN)
Jury Remarks:
The proposal is resolved among the existing ruins in a clear and logical way. The result is a building with a little visual impact. It’s respectfully integrated into the topography and takes care of the views that can be had of the building from the top of the mountain. The relationships between excavated spaces and the most open ones are very attractive.
A calm and powerful horizontal plane activates the ruined floor of the Monastery. A very compelling and restrained proposition, which maximises the spatial encounter with the fabric of the ruin and heightens the encounter with the horizon. Simultaneously intimate and immense; delicate and monumental.
The project is characterized by its ability to respond to architectural needs while deeply respecting the ruins and the landscape. An anti-object architecture, hypogean and silent, which presents, as a unique gift, a long cover as a shelter from the sun and the strong winds.
Congratulations !

3RD PRIZE
SM48134 Roman Joliy + Alice Cecchini (ITALY)
Jury Remarks:
The project solves the proposed program in a sensitive, respectful manner and with minimal visual impact. The program spaces fit between the ruins in an intelligent way. The tours through the complex offer an exciting sequence of spaces where the dialogue between the new and the existing can be appreciated.
This proposal establishes a tension between enclosure and revelation. This tension manifests in a play of proximity of the intervention within the ruined fabric of the monastery. It is further tuned through mass, and light. A marvellous, episodic proposition - which creates a strong narrative encounter with the site. Architecture - in its highest form - allows us to see ourselves encountering the world, and each other. This proposition speaks of solitude, loss, searching and love.
The project, through the introduction of new volumes, completes the forms of the ruins in a square geometry that aspires to abstraction, perfection and encounters with the spiritual. The circulation proposed is surprising owing to the alternation of open and closed spaces, of lights and shadows.
