Competition Brief + Submission Req's:

*** last update: November 30, 2016

Q1. All we need to submit is the horizontal A1 panel in digital version, no other document in needed, is it correct?

A1. The competition submission will consist of a single digital panel: (1) A1 sized panel (59,4 cm x 84,1 cm), Landscape / Horizontal layout.
For more information, please refer to the Competition Brief _ Submission Requirements.

Q2. As mentioned in the brief, a visitor comes to the retreat for a few days but the task is called 'a dwelling'. I am not sure if it's meant to be a recreational place for rent or a private place to live/retreat.

A2. The Site Dwelling, located on the cliff of the bay, in the village of Salir do Porto, aims to create a secluded destination, a place of retreat to engage with the landscape while providing shelter from the natural elements. This is a place to stay and inhabit for a few days, offering visitors a unique experience in a very special setting; visitors must leave the space / dwelling as they found it, empty.

Q3. Providing cooking and bathing means some mechanical engineering. Do we need to provide a solution (through natural sources) or it's completely abstract without any indication of where the water and energies come from?

A3. It is not mandatory for the design proposal to include mechanical engineering; depending on the design proposal, teams may contemplate the use of natural sources for cooking and bathing.  This is strictly an ideas competition, an academic exercise and will not be built. Urban planning and building regulations will not be applied to the design proposal.
For more information, please see Competition Brief _ Evaluation Process.

Q4. For visualizations, is it necessary to make renders or can I present hand-sketches?

A4. Yes, hand sketches can be presented. Graphic layout including text, drawings and renderings are to be determined by each team.
For more information, please refer to the Competition Brief _ Submission Requirements.

Q5. By stating "provide one unique place for sleeping" do you mean that the sleeping area should be one undivided place or is it possible to have 2 or more separate units for sleeping arranged in the same place?

A5. Depending on the design proposal, teams may reinterpret the program description. Places  for  living  /  resting, cooking, sleeping  and  bathing  can  be  combined  or  separate.
For more information, please see Competition Brief _ Evaluation Process.

Q6. Can the intervention be outside of the intervention area?

A6. Depending on the design proposal, teams may contemplate the possibility of intervening and extending outside the intervention area. The overall design of the Site Dwelling must be sensitive to the surrounding context. This is strictly an ideas competition, an academic exercise and will not be built. Urban planning and building regulations will not be applied to the design proposal. It is essential however, that each proposal emphasizes, respects and celebrates the site within this spectacular landscape. For more information, please see Competition Brief _ Evaluation Process.

Q7. Is it possible to submit a digital file with more than 5 Megabytes?

A7. No, the file type / size is: JPG (RGB Color) with 5 Megabytes (maximum). Recommended 300 dpi resolution. The JPG file may be compressed to a ZIP or RAR file format. This file type / size ensures a good quality of the digital panel.
For more information, please refer to the Competition Brief _ Submission Requirements.

Q8. As an ideas competition can we disregard the program?

A8. The program should not be disregarded; however depending on the design proposal, teams may reinterpret the program description.
For more information, please see Competition Brief _ Evaluation Process.

Q9. According to the Brief, there should be one designated sleeping area, one cooking area and one bathing area, along side the living area. My question is: How many people should the dwelling accommodate at one time? Also, can we add to the assigned program?

A9. The Site Dwelling program does not specify the number of people to accommodate. The program should not be disregarded; however, depending on the design proposal, teams may reinterpret the program description. This is strictly an ideas competition, an academic exercise and will not be built. Urban planning and building regulations will not be applied to the design proposal. It is essential however, that each proposal emphasizes, respects and celebrates the site within this spectacular landscape.

Q10. Should we be familiar with the building regulations in Portugal?

A10. No, this is strictly an ideas competition, an academic exercise and will not be built. Urban planning and building regulations will not be applied to the design proposal.
